Week 2 CFCC: Early Season Woes and Big 10's Beatdown

by: exRegionalWeenie

Early season NCAA scheduling leaves a lot to be desired, so blame The Man rather than Dirty Dawg for featuring a whole bunch of crappy teams in Week 2 games. Hey, it's not like we're big fans of Toledo, Temple, Navy (the football team), Northwestern, Ohio or East Carolina. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, so we did.

(Note: I would have added Central Michigan to that list of junk above but we actually ARE fans of the Chippewas. Well, at least one of Dirty Dawgs' founding dawgs is. He graduated from CMU and was giddy when the Chips won at Purdue, so I didn't want to be the one to crap in his cornflakes. Plus, I don't want to risk losing this high-paying writer's gig.)

Big 10's Beatdown
Even a Big 10 graduate and fan such as myself has to admit that we are reaching new lows. At least, it's hard to imagine things going any worse following Week 2's events.

Ohio State was an 11-point home favorite but lost to VaTech in a nationally televised night game (ouch). Michigan State failed in a Top 10 showdown at Oregon (double ouch). And Michigan played its end-of-rivalry game with Notre Dame and was SHUT OUT 31-0 (groin shot). Throw in Iowa and Nebraska needing last-second heroics to beat traditional powerhouses Ball State and McNeese Stinking State (at home!) and you have a recipe for relentless negativity from the media. But hey, at least Minnesota hung on to beat MTSU.

It used to be that the Big 10 lacked "SEC speed" but now things look much worse. Is it possible for a Power conference to have no bowl-eligible teams? We shall see...

Week 2 Results & Shout Outs
Honors for Week 2 go to Pete Fickenscher of Sacramento, CA. He went 14-1 with 100 points. Nice work, Pete. By the way, are you any relation to Penn State kicker Sam Ficken? Anyway, Pete had 8 more points than the three guys who tied for second place last week (Vu Nguyen, Andy Wood and Rob Myers). The Top 5 was rounded out by Eric Adams with a 90-point day. By the way, the average score among all contestants was a 49.

Overall Standings
Our new overall leader after Week 2 is Scott Biggs. He has an 8-point lead over Eric Adams and Mike Seaman who are tied for second place. Week 1 winner Dale Lininger slipped to a fourth place tie with Andy Wood with 198 points (10 points out of first). Of course, after just 2 weeks, this is pretty much irrelevant but we thought you'd enjoy the Shout Outs nonetheless.

I don't do Group Play so I'm tempted to ignore those of you who do. However, I don't want hate mail from both readers of this column, so here goes nothing: THREE teams are in a virtual tie for the Group Play lead. HookemHorns, Southern Pickers and The Spectacular Stupendous Florida Dummies all have 171 points and change. Shake & Bake and High Plains Drifters round out the Top 5.
