Usually, we get a series of opening week cupcake games where blue-blood powerhouses feast on FCS opponents on their home field. Dirty-Dawgers get to feast on those games as well, but not so much this year.
Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia, USC, Oregon, etc. were all left off the CFCC Week 1 Game Form. Instead, we got a few big intersectional games, a bunch of Low-Vegas-Spread specials, plus our
annual kickoff battle of Mississippi State versus Not Mississippi State. As a result, the usual Week 1 deluge of 15-0 and 14-1 records didn’t materialize this year. In their place, we got one 14-1 record
(not even for first place) and a legitimate -62 point effort where confidence factors 10-15 all lost - and mostly on favorites Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Oregon State, and Texas (sort of). Once again, there
is a fine line between a successful CFCC week and disaster as decent picks combined with bad confidence factors often end in malfeasance. On the plus side, the 2025 contest starts off with Mike Norden
of Mount Juliet TN in the lead with 100 points and a 13-2 record (losing only 3 on Oregon State and 7 on the Tom Brady-less NC Tar Heels). Mike is followed closely by both Jeremy Buckles (14-1; 98 pts) and
Gunner Driver (13-2; 98 pts).
In Group play, "The Border War Still Lives in KC" is in first after the Week 1 festivities - followed by Water Warriors and The Passing Wind. More importantly, for this year's best name, we at dirty-dawg.com world
headquarters are picking the HUNderdawgs from NWS Huntsville over the perennial favorites from San Antonio. Why ? To hear them decribe it;"A team of Huntsville meteorologists who can nail a seven-day forecast
but somehow turn college football picks into a Category 5 disaster. Each week they huddle like it’s a severe weather briefing—complete with charts, probabilities, and bold predictions—only to watch their “sure thing”
get blown away faster than a pop-up thunderstorm." Yep. Sounds about right. Our runners-up from San Antonio still made a strong entry in typical hilarious fashion as "The Trending Digital Reporters at MYSA". However,
the tea leaves weren't quite lined up this year.
And the good news for everybody, the games will get tougher from here on. Week 2 games are all on Saturday (September 6), and feature the Michigan at Oklahoma Orange Bowl Preview, the Kansas at Missouri Border War,
Not Mississippi State at Mississippi State (Bahama Bowl Preview), and of course Houston at Rice (on the Texas A&M Practice Field). The Deadline, as always, is 1100 am CDT, Noon EDT, and 1230 pm in Newfoundland.
