Best CFCC Week 3 in Years

Over the past few years I've ended up coordinating the CFCC Week 3 efforts, including selecting the 15 games for us to guess at.  This effort usually takes a few passes through the list of games to come up with 15 games--lots of Group of 6 or FCS payout games for the Blue Bloods in recent years for Week 3.  But this year was different--there were a lot of good match-ups and there were nine games with a less than 4-point Point Spread.  However, even with the low Point Spreads, CFCC scores weren't too bad with an average score of 62.  There were four upsets with the biggest being West Virginia (10-point dog) upsetting Virginia in a neutral site game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.  

The SEC made sure to capitalize on the Kiffin, LSU, Ole Miss drama from the off-season by having LSU travel to Ole Miss for a can't-miss entertaining game on the field and on the sidelines.  In a close game, Trinidad Chambliss led the Ole Miss Rebels to a 4th Quarter go-ahead drive to beat Lane Kiffin and the favored LSU Tigers.  Hollywood writers would have written a script for the game about the way it played out, with Bad Boy Kiffin grinding his teeth as the underdog home team Rebels sealed the victory.

NC State went off-script in their final play against Vanderbilt, to probably seal the 2026 Award for Most Embarrassing Way to Lose a Game and immediately propelled themselves into the Top 5 in the All-Time standings of this category, joining such generous gaffs as the 2015 Michigan gift to rival Michigan State, 1999 Baylor v UNLV, and 2023 Miami v Georgia Tech (look those up--hilarious for most of us!)   NC State blames A.I.

One extra point about the games–we had 4 CFCC games with at least a 1-hour Lightning Delay–most common in these first few weeks of the season. I’m sure many of you noticed how some of these games have a complete reversal in momentum after the delay.  Clemson and Alabama overcame pre-storm deficits with a storm surge of offense after the delays and won their games.  There were also pregame delays at South Carolina and Colorado State.

Now to the CFCC scores--Dale Parra, Clackamas, OR, blistered the field with a hot 110, and a 14-1 record.  Dale only missed the West Virginia upset and boldly picked Mississippi State to upset South Carolina with a 6.  Dale also got the Ole Miss and Central Michigan upsets.   Robert Ricks was in 2nd place with 100 and also nailed the Mississippi State upset with a 4 on them.  Robert and Dale made huge surges in the Overall Standings with Robert surging 25 places to #2 and Dale surging a whopping 193 places to #4 overall.  Our overall leader is Jacob Ventimiglia, New Baltimore MI, who bumped up to 1st place after being in 2nd place last week.  And now in 3rd Place Scott Franke, Kansas City, MO, bumped up 2 spots, from 5th Place last week.

In Group Play, BoomerBacks continue to lead, but with the slimmest of margins over Hillers Thrillers, with The Border War Still Lives in KC sliding up to 3rd Place.  

For Week 4, we have some great ranked v ranked match-ups:  in the SEC, we have Ole Miss trying to not have a letdown as they travel to Florida, #1 Texas goes to Tennessee, at Baton Rouge both Texas A&M and LSU try to bounce back after losses, and a sneaky-good game Missouri at Mississippi State, both trying to remain undefeated.  Meanwhile, ranked Big Ten matchups include surprising Iowa at blue blood Michigan and Oregon at USC.  The biggest Big 12 game looks to be Utah at Iowa State; not much worth picking/watching in the ACC this week, ha ha.
